Should I use some type of substrate under my playground?

YES! 75% of all injuries attributed to play systems are caused by falls. Most of these injuries could be easily prevented. Aside from protecting your children, using SLCM will make it easier and quicker to cut your grass, will protect your Play System from getting damaged by the lawn mower or grass trimmer and will eliminate muddy areas from developing in your Play System area. Critical Fall Test results are available at your retailer.

Is SLCM toxic?

NO! SLCM is non-toxic and non-allergenic. The non-abrasive texture of SLCM is unlikely to cause an injury if a child puts it in their mouth and chews on it. As with all surfacing products we encourage parents not to let children chew or swallow any Mulch product. MSD (Material Safety Data) sheets are available upon request at your retailer.

Does SLCM stay wet?

NO! SLCM does not absorb water and will not become compact so water drains through it. One of the best attributes of SLCM is that 15-30 minutes after it rains kids can go back outside and play without getting wet or dirty.

Does SLCM get hot?

Any type of surfacing product can become warm on very hot days. Since SLCM does not become compact, it has room for air to circulate. These pockets of air allow the heat to escape keeping the mulch much cooler than expected.

If SLCM is not made from car tires, what is it made from?

The industry term is "Industrial Scrap Rubber". It has never had metal in it and it does not contain nylon fibers. It's shape can be both thin and flat or thicker. Compared to car tire mulch we think it's much softer.

Does SLCM or SLRM contain latex?

While the risk is low, it is almost impossible for any rubber mulch company to insure that their mulch does not contain latex. Rubber mulch most often comes from recycled rubber, so it's difficult to be positive that latex wasn't mixed into the rubber supply.

Will SLCM decompose, how long will it last?

SLCM is made of 100% rubber. Since it doesn't decompose, SLRM will last many years without needing additional applications.

How long will the color on SLCM last?

After 3 years of researching colored mulch products and the different techniques to color rubber, Re-Tek had come to the conclusion that no colored rubber product will hold its artificial color indefinitely. Some companies warranty against total color loss (basically no warranty), some companies say their product will have minimal color loss for 5 years (how do you determine minimal?). At Re-Tek, we can tell you the following:

# 1 - We searched and found the best coloring agent we could find (in our opinion).
# 2 - Because of the nature of rubber and with children running and jumping on the mulch it is impossible to not expect that some color will not chip off over time. Colored mulch that is used for landscape uses has little to no color loss problem.
# 3 - If you're concerned about the coloring not lasting, we offer our best selling SLRM in natural black (we do not offer SLCM in black).
# 4 - As an honest company, we will tell you that coloring is not warranted (as opposed to having a warranty that means nothing - see above), and that over time some color may chip off.
# 5 - If you still have questions call us - we're nice people and don't mind talking.

What if SLCM gets thrown?

Unlike wood mulch and pea gravel, SLCM is highly unlikely to cause any type of injury if a child throws it at another child.

How should I install SLCM?

In most cases we recommend installing SLCM on top of your existing yard. Just put down a "typical" landscape fabric and spread the mulch over it. Unlike wood mulch products which are organic and decompose to create fertilizer, SLCM is inorganic and will naturally inhibit grass from growing once applied.

How is SLCM sold?

SLCM is sold in 40 lb. bags. This makes delivery or pick up very easy. Unlike bulk products, no special equipment is needed for transporting or spreading SLCM.
