WHAT ARE SLRT?: SLRT are playground/landscape timbers made from
recycled rubber. They are produced by a unique manufacturing process
that results in an extremely strong, durable rubber timber.
DIMENSIONS AND SHAPE: 4 1/2"H x 3"W x 5' 6" (length
after timber is interlocked). SLRT are made with a rounded top
that eliminates the sharp edge a wood border has. Interlocking
male and female ends give SLRT a "tight" finish when
put together. Each SLRT has 3 pre-drilled, recessed holes.
SAFETY: Unlike many borders, SLRT rounded top reduces the chance
of injury if a child falls on one during play. SLRT will not cause
splinters when touched, walked or sat on. Unlike pressure treated
or preserved wood, SLRT are not toxic and do not contain arsenic
or any other toxic chemical. {Recent studies have suggested that
the use of chemically treated wood has the potential to expose
a child to harmful toxins through touching, splinters or leeching.}
EASE OF INSTALLATION: Just lay
SLRT on the ground and stake down using a 10" x 3/8" galvanized
landscape spike (found at any home improvement store). If the ground
is loose or sandy, a 12" x 3/8" galvanized spike may be used. Unlike
wood timbers, SLRT have already been pre-drilled and only require
1
timber to
be 4
1/2" above
the ground (the appropriate height to retain surfacing products).
Installation is a one person job that typically takes less than
30 minutes.
NO SEAMS: SLRT have an interlocking male and female end. They
do not "butt" up to each other and will not have any
large gaps.
MOVING TIMBERS: SLRT can easily be disassembled and moved with
no tools, little effort and no damage to the timber. A great feature
for families that may want to relocate their play area.
LONG LASTING: How many years do you want your border to last?
SLRT will outlast any type of wood border. No staining is needed
to keep the appearance clean and neat. They will not chip or become
damaged by grass trimmers, and will not decompose from the elements.
HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO FOAM COVERED RUBBER? Recently some companies have begun to produce a timber that is actually a foam product covered in rubber (easy to tell because it's very light). Be cautious when considering them. Many of these timbers can easily be punctured using a pen or pencil. If a pen or pencil will put a hole in them imagine a weed eater and normal wear and tear? Foam timbers are also very rigid making them harder to install.
DOES SLRT HAVE A WARRANTY? Yes, SLRT is warranted for 10 years against chipping, splintering or cracking. This includes any damage that could be caused by normal wear and tear or abuse from landscape maintenance crews.
COST EFFECTIVENESS: SLRT have an initial higher cost than wood
borders. When you factor in the following costs associated with
wood, you will find that SLRT is the smart, affordable choice.
QUANTITY - In most cases one wood timber will not achieve desired
4 1/2" height.
INSTALLATION - Wood borders require pre-drilling at least 3 holes
per piece and digging a "channel" in the ground to achieve
a level border.
APPEARANCE - Wood borders require staining and preserving (chemical
sealing) to protect the wood. Wood will twist and warp over time.
REPLACEMENT - Wood borders will usually need to be replaced due
to chipping, rotting or damage.
